Modern Window & Doors, Inc., a family owned business launched by Jim Skaggs and his family in 1977, started building aluminum storm windows. Aluminum replacement window lines were added in 1978. In the mid 80s he decided to expand into the wholesale extrusion and glass business, delivering product throughout Arkansas, northern Louisiana, western Tennessee, southern Missouri, and all of Texas. He set up and trained dealers to build aluminum storm and replacement windows while continuing to build his own windows.

In 1987, after careful deliberation, Jim added vinyl double hung windows, known today as the Modern Series 4000. This window has been the top seller for years.

In 1992 he added two new windows to the line; the Series 3000 single hung and the Series 5000 casement, which are both welded vinyl windows. To accommodate this Jim added 8,500 square feet of manufacturing space to the plant to build these new windows.

In 1994 the wholesale extrusion and glass business were phased out so more time and space could be dedicated to building vinyl windows. In 1995 the Series 6000 vinyl patio door, Series 7000 terrace door, and Series 2800 single hung vinyl window were introduced.

Further expansion in 1996 added the Series 3700 welded single hung, Series 3800 mechanical single hung, Series 4700 welded double hung, Series 4701 welded slider, and the Series 4800 welded double hung with a mechanical sill. Another expansion of 22,500 square feet was added to the Modern plant to accommodate the new lines.

Jim is continually searching for better ideas to meet the aggressive and changing needs of the marketplace and today can usually be found in his office planning a strategy for the demands of tomorrow.
